Telecommuting and Teleworking Best Practices and Education
Outreach Program
Since July of 2000, when jo&co kicked off the “Working Anytime,
Anyplace, Any Way at Any Pace: Telecommuting and Teleworking
Best Practices and Education Outreach Program,” more than
102,000 commuting miles have been saved. That means more
than 5,100 gallons of gasoline have been saved. This has
also saved more than 2,500 hours in commute time that the
associates have used for opportunities like Olympic Volunteers
and helping other environmental issues likes the Wasatch
Energy Systems incinerator facility in Davis County.
According to the United
States Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Air and
Radiation (OAR), every gallon of gasoline a vehicle
burns puts out 20 pounds of carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas
pollution) into the atmosphere. Based on calculations, jo&co
has prevented more than 102,400 pounds of carbon dioxide
from being released into Utah’s air.
Also according to this agency, the average mid-sized car
produces about 13 pounds of smog-forming pollution per 15,000
miles. Larger vehicles produced even more. Taking that into
consideration, jo&co has saved the air about seven pounds
of smog over a period of 32 weeks.
The commuting time saved is based on an average of 16 employees
commuting an average of 20 miles each way to work five days
a week for 32 weeks. The gallons savings was based on an average
of 20 miles per gallon. The time savings was based on an hour
commute each day.
It is nearly impossible to estimate the amount of energy,
water, and other conservation issues that have been affected
by having a Virtual Office, but it runs into the thousands
of dollars.
