Web
Pages From Heaven
Hughes Network Systems Inc. bills the DirecPC Turbo-Internet
service as a competitor to ISDN, only faster and possibly
less expensive. The idea is to provide your Web pages
at one-third of T1 (1.544-megabits-per-second) speed without
requiring expensive digital phone lines. Instead, you'll
get unlimited data downloaded from one of several geostationary
satellites at 400 kilobits per second for less than $130
per month. Even better, Hughes delivers on its promise,
offering single users and-via a partnership with Helius
Inc.-network users high-speed, inexpensive access to the
Internet.

Accessing
the Internet via satellite: is satellite technology a
viable option for your school district?
Although available to the public since 1994, satellite
hardware and single-user software have recently been sold
through major electronic retail chains across the country.
Adapted from the same technology used by DirecTV pay-television
service - sign up and a satellite will beam movies to
you - Helius, Inc., Orem, Utah, now offers Network Edition
for DirecPC, a multi-user version of the software. |
