Technology
on the Horizon
The experts we asked, including Greaves and Dyrli, plus
Dan Broadbent, vice president of marketing for Helius
Corp.; and Dr. Alan Schmieder, JDL's V.P. for education,
generally agree that the products that will affect education
through the next 10 years are already in development.
Among the likely innovations and improvements they mentioned
were the following. Two-way satellite. Already in existence,
but "so darn expensive it's not affordable for schools,"
true two-way satellite communication should reach schools
within five years, says Broadbent. He sees satellite
transmission becoming not just faster and more affordable,
but developing a standardized interface as well, much
as television has now.

Satellite Router
Allows Faster Internet Connection for Rural Schools
Helius Inc. recently introduced a new satellite router
that would make school Internet access nearly eight
times faster than a standard modem. The Helius satellite
router is being marketed to schools that have poor phone
lines or schools that lie in rural areas. "Basically,
it gives them a faster connection to the Internet,"
said Dan Broadbent, vice president of marketing at Helius.

Bandwidth frenzy
"...In a recent conversation with Jack Thomasson,
chief scientist at Helius, we discussed his efforts
while at Novell in implementing software changes to
facilitate SCPC services over satellite. Central to
providing customers a working wide area network (WAN)
solution was adapting the network core protocols (NCP)
to operate smoothly given the additional end-to-end
delay. Earlier this year, Helius introduced its
new satellite router product. Helius' patent-pending
software technology provides advanced filtering and
loading balancing techniques that yields dramatic throughput
performance increases when compared to the standard
DirecPC implementation. What is interesting is how significant
the throughput gain is when considering their solution
resides only at the remote site. With the stand-alone
satellite router the company is moving towards operations
with more generic satellit e-DVB receiver platforms."
