Exceeding
the Limits; faster Internet access becoming essential
"And in July, Helius Inc. announced technology
to combine satellite and landline data access. The Helius
Convergence Router integrates satellite radio frequency
broadband and terrestrial communication interfaces into
a single router, allowing access to both landline and
satellite broadband. 'We believe satellite and land-based
connectivity should be combined,' says Myron Mosbarger,
president and ceo of Helius. 'Satellite is, without
dispute, the best option for large file distribution and
Internet streaming, while landlines are often better for
applications such as Web hosting, e-mail, and IP telephony.'" |

Trends: Delivering The Internet Via Satellite
"One such solution is being put forth by Helius
Inc., a company that has worked on speeding the delivery
of Internet via satellite for Hughes' DirecPC platform,
and is now directing this same know-how towards a product
for the
general market. The Helius Optimized Gateway (HOG)
is a box that sits at the uplink site and optimizes the
transmission stream, reducing latency, to allow a 200
to 400 percent improvement in file download and browsing
response times." |

Services Still Waiting For Liftoff:
Growing industry has yet to capture sizable portion of
the digital transmission market - Satellite analyst Kidd
anticipates the next generation of satellites, expected
over the next several years, will deliver business users
a radically lower price point, exponentially expanding
the market. And Myron Mosbarger, president and CEO of
Helius Inc., a company that provides satellite data products,
predicts that the satellite pricing model will move away
from dedicated bandwidth, where a company owns a particular
time segment whether it's using it for data transmission
or not, to a shared model, similar to frame relay.

LOOK AHEAD: Satellite Executives Share their Insights
Myron Mosbarger, CEO of Helius Inc., a small
satellite ground equipment supplier based in Utah, says
IP multicasting customers are asking for a full suite
of remote access tools to manage new IP networks employing
new satellite-access routers to connect network users
to satellite infrastructure. "We introduced our third
generation router in February. Routers are the trend,
and all will need SNMP (simple network management protocol),
remote management and the ability to diagnose and service
routers from a remote location." |

TWEAKING: Taking Satellite Network Performance to New
Heights
Several companies are making substantial contributions
in terms of enhancing the performance of satellite networks.
Greater reliability and efficiency means getting more
bang for the buck out of a typical satellite transmission,
while making satellite services more affordable helps
to attract lots of new customers as well. ...Companies
such as Starburst Communications, Imedia, Helius,
Adaptive Broadband, Combox, Xedia, Radyne Comstream and
V-Bits-which has been acquired by Cisco Systems- are also
companies on our constantly-growing list of satellite
network performance enhancers. |
