The
certification debate; Why do IT pros have such passionate
opinions about a few tests?
Carolyn Rose, who pioneered industry certification when
she was a senior vice president at Novell in the late
1980s, is today CEO of USWeb Learning, in Santa Clara,
Calif., which provides vendor-neutral Internet training
and certification. Rose says she sees certification
as a way to provide employers with skilled IT professionals
and provide definition for Internet
specialization. Rose cites industry studies that
point to improved productivity in companies where IT professionals
have been certified.

Return
On Internet
SWeb Learning's Web training program gives 'ROI' a new
twist. According to the folks at Santa Clara, Calif.-based
USWeb Learning Inc., formerly a subsidiary of USWeb Corp.,
ROI stands for "Return On Internet." To provide a large
ROI, the company is offering its instructor-led Certified
Specialist program to students seeking Internet mastery.
The program offers training and certification courses
for midsize to large organizations looking to create Internet
development teams. The training initiative focuses on
three areas of Web site deployment: creative design, technical
infrastructure and business strategies. |

Push Web Certification
The need for training seems clear: In a December study
by start-up Internet training firm USWeb Learning (www.uswl.com),
72 percent of 2,400 IT and non- IT professionals surveyed
say they would benefit from Internet training and certification;
85 percent rated their current technical Internet skills
as minimal to nonexistent. "We exist because there is
a skills gap in the Internet space today," says David
Marler, USWL's vice president of marketing and a former
Novell training executive. "What we've found is that non-Internet
professionals are using Internet technology for communications
tasks, but they're not trained to do it."

USWeb Learning is the latest company to offer a Web certification

David Marler, VP of marketing for USWeb Learning. "But
the company felt that to grow the education business,
it had to create a separate entity." |

New
Era In Web Mastery
With this in mind, you're about to see a big shift in
how Internet specialists are trained. The debut courses
offered by USWeb Learning, for example, focus first on
training would-be Internet specialists on methodologies
and problem-solving skills used in successful Internet
installations. Later, participants can supplement these
classes with technical courses. The organization is related
to USWeb through an equity investment and uses its methodologies
to build courses that guarantee what it has dubbed ROI,
